Monthly Review of the Texas Economy
June 2009

The Texas economy is sliding deeper into recession. The state's economy lost 222,400 jobs from May 2008 to May 2009, an annual job loss of 2.1 percent. Over the same period, the U.S. economy lost more than 5.5 million jobs or 4 percent of its total nonfarm jobs. The state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose from 4.7 percent in May 2008 to 7.1 percent in May 2009. The U.S. seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose from 5.5 percent to 9.4 percent during the same period.
